Pittsburgh Backyard Farmings Weekly Update 6/25/14

Pittsburgh Backyard Farmings
Weekly Update 6/25/14

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY!

News around our backyard farm:
  • Not much is going on around here! Still cleaning up the backyard for my sisters graduation party this Saturday!
  • We finally got around to finishing the picnic table! We sanded it and then stained it! The table looks pretty good from being 18 years old!
  • We've been having a lot of evening rain this week. When we went out to check on the garden this morning we noticed our tomatoes have blight!
    • We picked all the effected leaves!
    • We also sprayed them this evening with a water mixture of soap and baking soda... Hope it helps!
We want to hear from you guys! What do you want to see? Let us know by sending a message or comment below!

What's Going On In Our Garden

Cilantro and mint are doing great!

Found a cut worm in our sweet potato pot! It almost destroyed the entire plant!!!

Potato box is still going strong! We are starting to get a seed

Tomatoes have filled out nicely

Cherry Tomatoes!!!

Blight on our OX heart tomatoes
A baby bunny keeps eating our sweet potato vines! See the one in the bottom left corner... It is much further behind because of of it!

Cantaloupe is starting to climb the fence! We also have 15+ flowers on it! Hopefully we will get some fruit setting soon!

Onions keep getting bigger and bigger

Red raspberries!

Pepper plant had gotten a little tossed around in last night storms! We decided it was time to stake them.

Our cucumber plants are doing very well! We probably have 20+ flowers already. As you can see we don't have any snap peas growing on the trellis to the right.... Went out to do a daily check and had noticed they were very wilty. So we went out to water them to end up finding the bunny had mowed the stalks down and our poor snap pea plants were just hanging there!

One of many tiny cucumbers

Tomatillos

Love tomatillo flowers

Broccoli is coming along nicely! We just have to remember that when it comes time to harvest, cut the head at an angle! Last year we didn't and the stem ended up rotting! We had to pull our plants before we got any florets!

Just a glance at one section of the garden

Corn is almost chest high

Our potato grow bags had some wind damage

Ashley's herb garden is doing great

Bee Balm

Our finished table with one of the eucalyptus

Bay tree

Avocado tree getting more and more leaves!

With June coming to an end, check out our weekly updates for this month! It's been amazing to look back and see how fast everything is growing!

  1. Wow, your garden looks great! I'm growing oxhart tomatoes too, but yours are much, much bigger than mine! What zone do you grow from?

    1. Thank you! We've been growing this Oxhart strain for a couple years now! We had never even heard of Oxharts before then... We were given seeds a few years ago from a guy who had just moved here from Italy! He told us he has been growing them for years in his family! These tomato plants are huge, even from the star they are super thick seedlings! Come august and if we can support them they will reach +6 feet tall! When we get tomatoes... they are as big if not bigger then an actual ox heart lol! They are an excellent sandwich tomato... Much better then the "hybird" beefsteaks...
